Introduction: Parkinson's disease is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the world after Alzheimer's disease. Objective: To characterize patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease according to the correspondence between the diagnosis of Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study of patients diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease was conducted. Forty-five patients were selected by systematic case-series sampling. Medical histories were taken from each patient to establish a diagnosis according to traditional Chinese medicine. Results: Stage 3 had the highest incidence of emotional pathogenic factors (53.3 %) and physical-mental exhaustion (47.37 %). The pathogenic factor irregular diet occurred in stages 1 and 2 (both 36.36 %). Liver and kidney Yin deficiencies, the syndrome with the highest incidence in stages 2 and 3, were 40 %. Physical and mental exhaustion predominated as a pathogenic factor (42.2%). Liver and kidney Yin deficiency occupied the most frequent diagnosis (33.3 %). Conclusions: According to traditional Chinese medicine, patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease have physical and mental exhaustion as the root cause, followed by emotional pathogenic factors (anger, frustration and resentment) and liver-kidney Yin deficiency syndrome (the highest incidence), stages 2 and 3, on the Hoehn and Yahr scale.Downloads
