Abstract

Introduction: Infectious diseases are caused by various pathogenic microorganisms that offer resistance to treatments, due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, and generate problems in health systems worldwide, which makes it necessary to search for new alternatives.

Objective: To determine the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes strains to ethanolic extract of Schinus molle L. (molle) leaves.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The leaves of Schinus molle L. (molle) were collected in Lambayeque department, Peru, in good soil and phytosanitary conditions. Cultures of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus β-hemolytic were isolated from hospitalized patients and obtained from wound samples and pharyngeal swab from people with pharyngitis. There Were used 3 strains of Staphylococcus aureus (SA1, SA2, SA3), 3 strains of Streptococcus β-hemolytic (Streptococcus pyogenes) (BH1, BH2, BH3) and 5 concentrations (125 mg / mL, 250 mg / mL, 500 mg / mL, 750 mg / mL and 1000 mg / mL) of the ethanolic extract of molle leaves.

Results: The studied strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus β-hemolytic (Streptococcus pyogenes) were susceptible to ethanolic extract of the leaves of Schinus molle L. with inhibition halos ranging from 5.3 to 14.6 mm and 7.3 to 17 mm, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration for Staphylococcus aureus was 62.5 mg/mL, and for Streptococcus pyogenes it was 15.62 mg/mL and 7.81 mg/mL.

Conclusions: The studied strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus β-hemolytic are susceptible to ethanolic extract from the leaves of Schinus molle L.
